It’s good news for schools looking to offer EV charging on their premises. There’s now a way to fund chargepoint installations with the Government’s new grant, specifically designed to assist schools and nurseries with 75% of the associated costs.
With the aim of easing the financial burden of installing EV chargepoints and advancing the rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the Department of Transport is providing this grant as part of the Workplace Charging Scheme.
How much funding is available for EV chargepoint installations?
Each successful school can get 75% off the cost of EV chargepoint installations up to a maximum of £2,500 per socket, and up to 40 sockets across all sites.
What the funding covers:
The funding will cover the cost of the infrastructure needed to charge EVs. Whether that is just the chargepoint itself, or whether it’s a full turnkey solution. Many EV chargepoint installers will provide the following as the complete package:
- EV Chargepoint
- Signposts
- EV Bay Markings
- Maintenance
We’d advise getting a few quotes before deciding on an EV charger installer to explore who can give you the best solution for your requirements.
Eligibility Criteria
Only state-funded schools and education institutions in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland can apply for the funding. The funding does not extend to the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
School must also meet the following criteria:
- Off-street parking facilities clearly associated with the site
- Site surveyed by an EV chargepoint installer to confirm the site can support EV charging
- No other grants applied for the same chargepoint
- Less than £315,000 in financial assistance received over the past 3 financial years
- Authority to apply for the funding on behalf of the organisation

How To Apply
Schools should check they meet the above criteria before applying and check with the EV chargepoint installer that the site has the electrical capacity to support the number of sockets needed.
There is an online application form to complete which will require an ID, SEED or reference number. Multi-academy trusts will need to complete a separate application form for each individual school.
On successful application, a voucher code will be sent so schools can share it with their chosen EV chargepoint installer. The installation will need to be completed within 180 days of the original issue date.
What’s the deadline for applications?
The funding is confirmed until 31st March 2025.
Additional Restrictions & Requirements
A few other factors to consider when applying for the EV chargepoint funding is the chargepoint models that are approved. See the list of authorised chargepoint models and search by model or manufacturer to check any you are considering.
Additionally, each site must have:
- A minimum power supply of 3kW to each individual socket
- Power supply must not diminish with simultaneous use
- No more than one socket per accessible parking space
- Installations completed by an authorised installer.
Schools should be truthful in their applications to avoid refusal of payments due to false claims found during audit checks, including applications for chargepoints that were not installed.
